1. L'WEATHER Introduction
The L'WEATHER Programs consist of a growing set of applications that assist
the weather observer in collecting, viewing, modifying and analyzing weather
data.
The L'Softworks Limited products currently include:
■ LWEATHER Extremes Record Keeper & Almanac with Station Daily Logging
■ DAILY a Daily Station Record and Climatological Analysis Application
■ HISTORY Extremes Database Manager with current year Almanac information
■ LOGGER Station Log Database Manager
■ MAPPER for displaying weather maps and station weather information
■ ALMANAC a daily sun, moon, and astronomical information center with
computed weather information for locations you select
Each of the database manager products works with a Weather Database File. The
LWEATHER Program uses two Database files: a Historical (All-Time Records)
DataBase (HDB) and a Station Log DataBase (LDB) file. The Historical Database
file consists of a set of information for each day of the year. The Log File
Database contains a daily entry that you supply for your station for each day
that you collect weather information. The Daily DataBase (DDB) has the
Maximum, Minimum, Precipitation and Snowfall amount for each day for the
available station records for a selected station. The HISTORY program uses
the HDB database, the LOGGER program uses the LDB database, and the DAILY
program uses the DDB database.
The L'WEATHER Products were designed and written for the IBM-PC and Compatible
category of computers. The products require at least 512 kb of RAM in your
computer. The Disk Operating System must be Version 2.0 or higher. A hard
disk is recommended. Currently, the databases created by the L'WEATHER
Applications (with the exception of the DAILY Database Manager program) will
fit on a 360 kb floppy diskette. However, in order to collect and add to an
expanding database, and depending on which product(s) you order, a hard disk
with 5 to 10 megabytes free is recommended. (Three megabytes is required for a
DAILY Database containing 100 years of daily records)
The database applications work with either a monochrome or a color screen and
use only text based characters for the graphics mode, so no special graphics
adapter or screen is required. The MAPPER Application does require a graphics
adapter and screen to display the weather map information.
A printer is optional. (Required if you want to print monthly reports).

2.1 L'Weather History & Logfile Database Manager : LWEATHER
The LWEATHER Program is the original program developed by L'Softworks
Limited. It works with an All-Time Historical data file which consists of an
entry for each day of the year for the Temperature Maximum, Minimum, and
Mean, along with the All-Time Precipitation and Snowfall for each day. The
year that the record occurred is listed for the All-Time categories. See
HISTORY for additional information. LWEATHER also allows you to Log your own
station weather information. It has a monthly report printing feature, along
with a monthly graphics display of the temperature extremes. See LOGGER for
additional information.
(See the screen displays that follow for more information about the LWEATHER
Program.)
2.2 L'Weather DAILY Database Manager : DAILY
The major function of the DAILY Database Manager Program is to provide you
with a way to see daily weather records that have been collected for a period
of time. If you received a data set prepared by L'Softworks Limited, that
data set probably contains a daily entry for the Maximum and Minimum
Temperature along with the daily Precipitation and Snowfall amount recorded
for a number of years. (Usually from 1948 to 1986, but the data set may
contain more or less data depending on the availability of the Station
Records for the location selected.)
Your data set can be added to as you record information for each new day. An
editing feature also allows you to modify the weather data in cases where the
information previously entered is found to be incorrect or to add information
for missing data.
Screen displays in the L'Weather DAILY Database Manager allow you to easily
select the information you want to see. The Daily Records screen display
shows the Maximum and Minimumin temperature along with the Precipitaion and
Snowfall recorded for that day for the current highlighted day along with the
same information for the previous nine years. A 10-year average is calculated
by the program and displayed after the last line of data.
You can also see up to 30 years of Temperature and Precipitation data nearly
instantly in an on-screen graph by simply pressing a function key. The
information displayed is for the day you have selected in the current year and
the previous 29 years. A special feature of this 30 year graph is that the
Daily 30-year Mean Maximum and Minimum Temperature is also calculated for the
day you select. Many reports can be generated by the DAILY application.
The usage of each of these & additional features is described in more detail
in the DAILY Database Manager User's Guide that comes with the product.

2.3 L'Weather History DataBase Manager : HISTORY
The Historical Records file that the L'Weather History DataBase Manager
(HISTORY) knows about consists of a set of data containing the following
information:
Date; Sunrise & Sunset; Moonrise & Moonset; Today's Normals (30 year mean
averages when available) for the High, Mean, and Low temperature; Records
regarding High temperature, Low temperature, Precipitation, and Snowfall
along with the Year each occurred; and finally a 70 character note field
containing any associated notes for the date.
When you order HISTORY you receive a file that has REC as the last three
characters. This file is the input file that is used to create the History
DataBase (HDB). Exact details concerning the format of this file are
included with both the LWEATHER Program and the HISTORY Program.
(See the screen displays that follow for more information about the HISTORY
Program.)
2.4 L'Weather Logfile DataBase Manager : LOGGER
The Daily Logfile that the L'Weather Logfile DataBase Manager (LOGGER) knows
about consists of a set of data containing the same information as the
L'WEATHER Log File database:
Date; Time; Observer; 24 hour Precipitation; Snow/Hail amount; Current,
Maximum, and Minimum values for Temperature, Humidity, Barometric Pressure,
and Wind; A Wind Direction and Average Velocity field; a field for Percent
of Cloud Cover and for Cloud Type; a Coded Weather Notes field; and an
additional area for more notes.
When you order LOGGER you receive a file that has LOG as the last three
characters. This file is the input file that is used to create the Logger
DataBase (LDB). Exact details concerning the format of this file are
included with both the LWEATHER Program and the LOGGER Program.
(See the screen displays that follow for more information about the LOGGER
Program.)

At this screen you view the currently highlighted Daily Data, along with the
data for the previous 10 years and the 30 Yr and All-Time Records for the
station (if enough records exist). A new day of data can be selected by
pressing one of the Cursor Movement Keys described in the Cursor Block under
the Calendar Display.
The data that gets displayed can be either data that you have collected for
your own station for a long (or short) period of time, or data prepared by
L'Softworks Limited from a data set of your selected city.
Many cities are available, and usually the period of record is from 1948
through December 1986 (this ending date will grow as additional data is
added for your city).
Once the initial database exists, you can add to the database in either
directory as you accumulate new records or gain access to other older
historical data records for your city. In some instances, databases have
been prepared that begin in the 1880s and continue through 1990!
Some of the pages that follow show the graphic and text reports that are
possible when using the DAILY Database manager application.

A couple of things to note about this screen. First, the number of years that
went into doing the calculations for the Averages, Normals, and Extremes is
listed with each category: TEMPERATURE, PRECIPITATION, and SNOWFALL. The
Temperature Ranges grouping is kind of an interesting summary of information.
Here you see the distribution of all the Minimum and Maximums recorded in your
database. If you add together the MinCnt listed for <= 32 and the MinCnt
listed in the >32 group, you should get something close to the same number as
you get when you multiply the number of years listed for the TEMPERATURE
category times the number of days in the month represented by the Report. Any
difference indicates missing data in your database (broken instruments or
vacations by the observer, etc. are possibilities).

MAPPER, a Weather Mapping Program
The L'Weather MAPPER program is used to display a map of a selected area
along with the weather data information for a selected set of stations within
that area. Three categories of files are used in each display session: a
MAP file, a SIL (Station Identification and Location) file, and Weather Data
files.
The MAPPER application can create the data files or you can download the
information from a weather information service. The L'Weather MAPPER program
can display data contained in up to three data files onto a single map. The
example files contained with the MAPPER program contain the information in
the format expected by the L'Weather MAPPER.
Displaying A MAP and DATA information
Once you have selected all of the files you want at the MAPPER OPTIONS menu
(MAP file, SIL file, and DATA files), you can select PLOT the MAP & DATA to
begin your graphics mapping session.
The current format of the DATA display is:
Air Temp Station ID
DewPt Temp o
Barometric Pressure
You can also choose to display contour lines for any or all of the three data
categories supported (temperature, dew point, and barometric pressure).
Several options allow you to control the color and the spacing of the contour
lines.
Due to an absence of graphics features in the editor that created this
document, no MAPPER screen displays are included. To really get a good feel
for this product (as well as any of the other L'Softworks Limited products)
you might want to order the demonstration diskette which contains a good
sampling of each of the products.
